You know a band is hot when they’ve built up a notably sized following without having released any studio recorded music. When they’re repeatedly asked back by venues, promoters and festivals based entirely on the strength of their live shows and the response they receive from crowds.
It builds up a sense of anticipation whilst ensuring the band retains an element of mystery. The only way to hear their music is by going to see them live or by scouring YouTube for that song they played. The one that went like that. Can’t find it, just gonna have to see them live again!
This is unusual in the modern world. Y’know, waiting for something patiently and not having it available to us immediately. What do you mean, Alexa? You don’t know what an Ophelia’s Beard is? No, I don’t want to hear my shopping list.
But there becomes a time when the lure of releasing music is too strong. With great expectation comes the potential of crushing disappointment and the anxieties that come with new territories. Not with Ophelia’s Beard, not with their debut single, Red Sea, a debut brimming with enough gusto to fill, I dunno, the Red Sea. Yeah, good one.
Red Sea embodies the boundless energy the band has become so hyped for, encapsulating the mood, the raucousness, and untamed spirit they ferociously exude so naturally and effortlessly. Ophelia’s voice epitomises everything that she and the band represent, but the music matches it, and the production by Gareth Bodman (recording) and Jon Greening (mixed and mastering) is supreme.
The timing of this release may come as a bit of a surprise. As novelty Christmas songs hit the airwaves and the media pump out their 2025 ‘best ofs’, Ophelia’s Beard have released a courageous and fearless debut single of alternative folk rock! One you’ll want to spin again and again and again, leaving you wanting more! And more is what you’re gonna get, but this will do you for now. Enjoy!
