In the six years or so since the inception of Mr Bewlay, we’ve already seen enough range, versions and eclecticism to see many artists through an entire career.
The electro-pop infused Electric Reason EP in 2022 was followed by the more bass heavy, brooding Black Reason EP in 2023 and completing the trilogy a year later was Against All Reason, Bewlay’s most ambitious studio work yet, an EP containing Worst of All Women and Honey, two would be hits in another dimension.
Last year was quieter on the recording side of things, but no less demanding and successful, with Bewlay starring in Miracle Drivel, a self-written, produced and directed stage show. This show was sound tracked by a live band playing the songs from the trilogy of EPs. The point I’m making here is to highlight his ambition and penchant to take on the weird, wonderful and unexpected.
Which leads me nicely to this latest single that I’m reviewing; Sausage, Chips and a Can of Drink, a boisterous, two and a bit minute stomp as beautifully chaotic as the title suggests. Unlike anything we’ve heard from Bewlay yet it sounds like Chas & Dave having the most fun (remember fun?) they ever had in the boozer. And if you think this is disparaging to either artist, then you clearly haven’t been through your Chas & Dave phase…yet. Let me help you.
Musically the song is as tight and sharp as you would expect from Bewlay and the crack team of musicians he invariably assembles, all astutely put together by guitarist/producer Lewis Hawkins. So stick it on, play it on repeat, get down the pub and finish with the nations favourite takeaway. And enjoy, me old China!
