The Rogues – Oh Gena

It’s been a few weeks since The Rogues released their latest single Oh Gena and for some reason I can’t picture it without a comma and an exclamation mark. Oh, Gena! probably would’ve been a better title actually, given they’re from Newport. Any more tips on song titles needed, give me a shout.

To coincide with the release of Oh Gena the lads played a sold out headline show at Cardiff Uni’s Y Plas. It’s a big deal for a band still very much in their formative years, but knowing the lads, they’ll see this merely as a stepping stone to something bigger, no doubt followed by The Rogue Army, which has grown from a friends and family entourage to a legitimate “away support” style of fanatics who know every word to every song whether released or not.

Oh Gena has actually already been released as part of the 1963 (Live at Rockfield studios) EP released in 2024, an EP which reached number 3 in the UK Physical Singles chart. This version, produced by Richard Jackson, who has spruced/sped/funked it up a little, giving it that little more urgency and polished feel.

Built aroud a bluesy riff by guitarist Alex Ainsworth, the song tells a story of a dalliance with the songs protagonist.  “Oh Gena, I’m irresponsible” smirks Andrew Flannelly. Aways toying with cockyness, but remaining charming with a wry glint!

Oh Gena is a radio friendly 3 minute pop song, nothing wrong with that though, songs needs to be radio friendly to get on mainstream radio at a sociable hour these days, cant be too “out there”.  It’s a song that will please their crowd and no doubt bring in some new ones to join the Rogue Army! Go on lads.

Oh Gena’ is out now on all of the usual streaming platforms on Flip Flop Recrods. Give The Rogues a follow on socials to keep up to date with all thing The Rogues
